Facebook keeps emailing me and hinting that I should update my bookshelf feature. It's like - "You have been reading 'Being Alive' for more than a week. Is this still true?" With an undercurrent of 'OMG, how stupid are you?' SHUT THE HELL UP, Facebook! I don't have to justify my lifestyle choices to you, dammit!

XD

- the fact that Rodney saves 'John' for special occasions is fantastic and adds to the ridiculous squeep every time.

- John Sheppard waking up is the most adorable thing ever, and Ronon and John have this kind of fraternal relationship that really makes me very happy; there are ways that the SG:A writers fuck up when writing how people react to Ronon, but I don't have a problem with John's relationship with him at all.

- Speaking of the fucking up. People have been reacting badly to the fight scene, and yes. It does look seriously bad when you consider it in the light of many science fiction prevailing racial stereotypes and so on - [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza has made a post talking about it and there's some very interesting discussions in the comments. I think... the way I see it is that it would be a far worse thing if it was on, say, original Star Trek. Because that would be Kirk involved, and that would be an indication of the planet's barbarian nature, and so on and so forth. I think that it's not so much a racial thing when you can see John Sheppard being put in the exact same position, on Atlantis, and things working out pretty much the same way. John Sheppard is a difficult one, because he's just lazy, frankly. But if he managed to get hella pissed off with Jack O'Neill, are you saying that there wouldn't be bets? I don't know. I think the SG:A writers should think a lot more carefully about the way they do things, much of the time. But I didn't find the scene repulsive, as some people did.

- John so very much found excuses to get Rodney up in the cockpit with him. Don't deny it.

I'm with you, RE: the fight scene. To be honest, it never even crossed my mind until I started seeing negative comments. For one thing, sparring is such a huge part of both Teal'c and Ronon's characterization, canonically -- their physicality is very important to them. They're the strong men on each of their teams. They're the ones who get sent in to muscle information out of bad guys. So to see them sparring with each other? Hell yeah, that'd be something to see, simply because they're both pretty legendary in the SGC for doing just that. To me, the fact that they're both people of color is an afterthought. Do I get what people are saying? Yeah, I do, but I also believe any negative connotations were entirely accidental on the part of the writers.

Ahahaha I rambled. SORRY.

It's the grin on Ronon's face and the way he tries to hide it and is just completely UNABLE to!

I agree, totally, but I don't think that excuses the writers, really. They're just... it seems like they've grown up with the dubious sci-fi traditions and they're reliving it now, except the things that worked then don't work any more. So you get moments of dubious racial and sexual politics, frequently, and it's not deliberate but they should maybe think a little harder before they let these scripts go through.

That said, the fight was bloody awesome. XD

I do get what you're saying, absolutely. The thing that I keep thinking of, though, is that historically there's been a lot of input between the actors and the production staff regarding things that are okay versus things that are not, and it seems like Chris Judge and Jason Momoa were pretty okay with the scene. They're two intelligent people with a better grasp of racial politics than probably 95% of the fandom, given that fandom is pretty racially homogeneous. If they'd seen a glaring problem with it, if they were horrifically uncomfortable, I'd like to think that they would have said no way. Especially Chris Judge, who has tenure out the wazoo in the Stargate universe.

Now, all that said, perception is reality, and so if there's a huge outcry from the viewers and they've perceived it this way, then I guess the writers need to rethink some stuff. *shrugs*

You're probably right - actors don't overthink things as much as fandom does. It was just a consideration I found kinda interesting. :D

How's you, in any case?

It takes a long while to get used to them. Talk to the doc -- it might be that you need to change the time of day you're taking them. I had to switch from AM to PM.
