Do you know anyone that can knit? I think initially being taught by someone is the best method but there are plenty of books that can help. Mel learnt from reading the first Stitch and Bitch by Debbie Stoller which has diagrams and info about how to knit. But I would definitely ask someone if they can teach you the basics and then start with a garter stitch scarf to get into the groove and continue from there. :)
