Piercings involving the mouth = gross. Sorry, I've seen way too many infections and people who don't seem to realize they have an open wound that has food near it all the time. Gah.

I will have to take mine out if I land the job I want next year. Still, I don't regret getting it done and I absolutely love it to pieces, so I say go for it!

I could see Tongue. I could see labret, but I've never been fond of liprings.

I was thinking more central, though. :D

I confused. All the pictures I see on google image search of 'labret' are lip piercings to me.

Yeah, I'm probably gonna have to take mine out for teaching, should I get one, but man it's tempting. And more easily reversible should I disapprove than the tattoo I've been considering. ¬_¬

I always thought they were a specific kind of lip piercing that goes under the bottom lip, but just above the chin.

I have this rather bizzare symmetry requirement for things, and so if there can't be two of something, the one should be on the midline.

If you enjoy it as much as I do, it's worth it even for ten minutes. ;) Seriously, though, go for it. A little swill with some of that two-tone mouthwash is all I've ever needed to keep oral piercings utterly infection-free.

Also: am I not entirely too preppy for a lip ring?

Ooh also good. (I don't know, I just have a thing about lip rings tucked into the corner. I have a thing about the corners of mouths really in general!)

I don't like tongue piercings but lip piercings are pretty much always cool. And if you want one you should get one because they're pretty easy to reverse.

I don't like snake piercings. I dunno, I just kind always thought of it in the middle - I have a very symmetrical mouth. Also, it would totally unbalance my ears - I have three in each ear, although in different places. I don't want to screw up the FENG SHUI of my FACE.

The thing about the mouth is that because it's one of the body's major openings containing some pretty sensitive tissue, it's got hefty microbial defenses and regulatory systems. Keep the skin-side of the piercing clean, and you should have no problems with infection. Saline worked well enough for me.

For the first couple of weeks, drink through a straw and eat only small, flat food. Do not to go a night-time of the Indiana Jones trilogy mere hours after getting pierced because three consecutive films is a long time to go without popcorn. After a year the piercing will certainly be healed enough for the jewellery to be removed during the day for work, and worn the rest of the time. Always take a wee plastic back or tiny box to work for jewellery storage in case you are having a conversation with your boss at 10am and wonder why he keeps looking at your lip instead of maintaining his usual level of eye contact.

And if, for some reason, you take to wearing a cone-tipped spiral (http://www.ouchbodyjewellery.co.uk/acatalog/020189.gif) in your lip, remember to take it out before kissing anyone...

Ahhh, the embarrassed voice of experience.

*curious*

What, exactly, do you mean by 'worth it'? My piercing's not generally visible, but I've had it for 10 years and love it to pieces. Do you mean would it be worth it to do the things others have suggested above, i.e. take it out for teaching, saline and special food for a while, etc?

Gopher it. ;o)

Bear in mind it will take several months to fully heal. They'll fit you with a bar at first (or should!) and then swap over to a ring once the piercing has healed nicely. If you then have a job which requires taking it out, you can purchase BCR openers and closers from the piercing studio (they're like specialised pliers sprung in opposite ways) which will enable you to take it out for jobdays and put it back in for weekends, holidays, etc.

There is no reason for anything to go wrong, if you choose a reputable piercing studio and look after it properly - a very easy task taking minimal time and effort. You can eat normally throughout.

Personally I would rather go without my clothes than without my tongue piercings and lip ring!
