I have some sort of paint program on this computer, which automatically saves every image in .bmp format. This, unfortunately, doesn't bode well for icon making. Anyone know how I can overcome this?

Is it the program that's doing it or the web browser? Because my browser was doing that for a while and I had to wade through and delete some cookies in my temp file to fix that.

Under the file menu, is there a "save as" option? If so, see if it has either .jpg or .gif as one of the available file formats.

only has .bmp as an option. I think perhaps it's because the computer has me on some kind of bizarre underprivileged setting. I can't pick up my uni emails, either. I'll have to go talk to my department about it.
