Bad news: my pupil gets one more detention, he's permanently excluded. Considering he averages 5 a week, I'm thinking he'll not be coming back next Monday no matter how hard I try to keep him in check.

Good news: they like me enough that my job is safe; I'll be transferred to another student. The Senior Leadership Team seemed to think that was why I was asking for clarification, but to be honest I hadn't even thought about my job. I was worried on my student's behalf, first.


I'm glad I'm staying, because I love my job and I love the school. But. Not my best day ever, y'know?

Sometimes, no matter how much help you can offer, it's not enough. But it sounds like you were at least getting through to him, at times, and even if it doesn't provide immediate help, I know it won't be forgotten. You're good at this, love.

That's just...argh. My mother-in-law is an EWO (or some similar acronym), and I've got so much admiration for you guys trying to keep these kids in school.

A job you love and school you love goes a long way, I guess, but sorry for your pupil :(

I really hope so because I genuinely like him and think he has potential. He just really needs someone on his side, and having been excluded is going to make that harder in his next school. :/

I think it's mostly an attempt at having a standard term for it in order that schools can't call it something else and therefore improve their statistics in the government's eyes, or something. That seems to be the case, anyway

One of the most profound--and horrible--truths my dad taught me years ago is that not everyone can be saved. The awful thing is that I'm sure that if the boy had a better early life, he wouldn't be in this position now. That said, it's his choice to end up in detention so often, and it's very sad that this choice means he's losing such a caring mentor in you. I hope that, as other people have mentioned here, that he'll change his behaviour when he sees the consequences.

I can't help wondering, though, if the school wouldn't be making a better choice by ensuring these at-risk students get extra help, instead of making it a privilege. It seems to me that this boy needs you more than ever now. On the other hand, I don't know anything about the school or this student's history, so I don't really have a right to say anything.

Anyway, you have my sympathy, but also congratulations on the school seeing your worth! That's wonderful.

I know. It's always really sad when the education system has to finally admit failure. But presumably another school will take him? And there might be someone else who can get through to him there.

I get that this was a crappy day for you and it's says so much about you that your first concern was your student and not yourself. It's a huge shame that there's this strong likelihood of this kid screwing up yet again....but I gotta say that there's only so much you could have done. Ultimately, he has to take responsibility for himself and try to change. He an'y be helped if he won't help himself y'know? So I know that you did everything you could and perhaps if you'd been working with him longer, a bigger difference would have occurred-but you really tried and no matter what happens to him, that will always have an impact on his life.

The school recognises your awesomeness and knows that so many of the kids will benefit from your help. You rock *hugs*
