Feb. 14th, 2009 05:43 amThe latest delightful trend in our school - now that I have made the pupils in my classes uncomfortable enough not to use 'gay' as an insult half so much as they used to - is for any and all things they consider unfair (such as asking them to do their work) to be called 'racist'.
Needless to say they get a verbal smack around the back of the head every time; it's difficult, in a maths lesson, with around 30 seconds to explain, to let them know precisely why they CANNOT HAVE THAT WORD.
(For the record, the county in which I teach is around 95% white. The school I teach in is more like 73%.)
I feel like I ought to put together some kind of assembly or something. Most of them wouldn't listen, and despite the amount of reading I have done and the amount I try to learn I would still suck at it. But maybe I could open their eyes to how they could maybe suck a little less?
