Ugh. So I tried REALLY HARD, okay, and I chucked out a car load of stuff, and still it's going to take two two-hour-each-way trips to get things back to Southampton. Now feeling stupidly painfully guilty and trying not to burst into angry tears.

Suggestions of nice things to buy my dad to say sorry?

(He's the kind of guy who volunteers in an Oxfam shop when he's not working and is going to Nepal to help build an orphanage for his summer holiday next year, for reference. Also he doesn't care about chocolate but will consume all CDs ever...)

I think something practical for him to take with him to Nepal would be appreciated then?

Oh sweetie. Speaking as a parent, you know, it is annoying when your child pulls this sort of thing, but the irritation passes like a spring shower the minute said child does something which shows that they still love and need you and then you remember that your child is the Best Ever and that secretly you would drive twice to John O' Groats for them...

It's good to apologise and appreciate your Dad's help but there is no need to get into a funk over it.

I am not good at suggestions, but my Mum was really pleased with a mix CD I made her that was a combination of rarely heard songs from her youth and songs I thought she would like. My Dad likes books on a certain subject so I have gone on Abebooks or the like and found out-of-print or first editions or signed editions of books on that topic. Comedy CDs?

I second [livejournal.com profile] cryptolect here, although without the added cachet of being a parent. My experience is that yes, they might wish they had been able to skip a few hours of driving for that, but it's not that big a deal. Especially when the child shows that they don't take those hours of driving for granted, but that they do feel grateful and sheepish, and just need the help in this thing. So yeah, let him know you really appreciate the help, but there's no need to beat yourself up, you know? I feel very sure it's okay.

All of my ideas are also ones that other people have said -- something to take to Nepal, or a mix cd or other personalized cd, or just a cd by an artist you know he likes or one you've been meaning to toss his way?

Next time I move I totally will, but it's not possible this time. Partly because he's already left... XD

ah fair enough. I was about THIS CLOSE *holds fingers close* to having to do that this time. Only didn't because I paid for storage, instead.
