So... within Inception, is there enough characterisation of Arthur and Eames to make AUs valid? I've enjoyed reading a couple, but... they were mostly just fun slash stories. I'll be honest. I dunno, I'm not against extrapolating, but other than 'straightlaced' and 'endearments' what have you got? I don't mean this in a bitchy way, I mean this genuinely.

I'm going to see it again tonight. Maybe it'll make more sense to me then. :D

ETA: this film totally has a really interesting setting, and I'm interested in extrapolations based on the canon that is available, sorry for lack of clarity.

This is kind of the reason I'm not too interested in reading Inception fic at all--I enjoyed the movie a LOT, but a lot of the stories feel like I'm reading the SAME story over and over again with the same characterizations. And the problem gets even worse when it's an AU.

I don't know, I reckon that there could potentially be interesting explorations of the characters/situation in a fanfic, but I don't see the point of AUs when a)the original concept is so interesting and b)the characters frankly aren't particularly well drawn unless you've explored the characters semi-canonically first...

As we all know, my fics are hideous and unoriginal and stupid, and the lack of canon backstory certainly won't have allowed me the freedom to come up with anything interesting, and that's why you shouldn't read them.

Also, fuck AUs.

What. I worded this post poorly, I meant to say that there was stuff from which to extrapolate, and that the setting was interesting. But totally jump on me, because I think your fic is crap so very often! Obviously! :P

No, it just intrigued me that you were asking questions about the fanfic output of Inception fandom when at least two people on your flist have posted it and you could READ IT and find out for yourself. And at the moment "intrigued" is coming out as "COCKFACED" because I'm trying to avoid beating someone to death for being a moron about Sherlock.

is there enough characterisation of Arthur and Eames to make AUs valid

I defintely think so. I may have acquired a Cam version of the movie, which may have allowed me to watch their individual scenes over and over again, and honestly you get more of their characterisations if you ignore their scenes together.

Arthur's facial expressions and his reactions to Cobb (and to Mal) show dedication and humor and conflict. Eames' planning and plotting (and [livejournal.com profile] bookshop's Eames Is Smart thread covers this beautifully) is key to the story, showing psychological insight and a very particular canny-ness (I have no clue on the spellng of that).

In fact, I think the sheer glut of fic (most of it remarkably good) that Arthur/Eames has produced has done both characters a bit of a disservice. Some attributes (Arthur's fussiness, Eames' endearments) have been absorbed as (IMO) more key to their characters than they actually are. In fact, I'm toying with some Arthur charactersation right now and I really don't see him as that... uptight. Precise and detail-obsessed, yes, but not the anal-retentive control-freak that many fics make him out to be.

Aaaaaaand you can tell I've been thinking about this way to much, yeah *g*

Edited b/c good lord I can't spell.

Not sure it could be restrained to just John though - there are a hell of a lot of pretty mouths in the world.

This! About Arthur. There's a difference between being precise/detail-oriented and being uptight/repressed/control-freakish.

... possibly I have said the same thing a number of times about Simon Tam. Er.

Oh, Simon.
I sort of want a long conversation between Arthur and Simon, now, where they commiserate about being completely misunderstood in their respective fandoms.
