Concern: on my external hard drive folders keep appearing with long title strings of alphanumeric burble. When I try to delete them, access is denied, but my virus checker says there is no problem with them. Huh and whut? What do I do?

Possibly files of temporary data that will go away of their own accord? Or are they accumulating?

windows system, yes? They're probably left over from a failed/interrupted windows update. ('cause microsoft is special that way)
note: the directions below are for an enterprise version of xp. If it doesn't line up enough to figure out, send me your os and I'll give you tailored steps.

To fix:
1) Right-click over the folder and go into properties.
2) Click on the 'security' tab.
3) (assuming that you're a local admin on your computer) Click on the 'Administrators' group that's in the upper section, and then check the box labeled 'Full Control' on the lower section.
4) Click 'Apply'
You should now be able to delete the folder. :)
