Houseshares don't have to be a bad thing. I lived in one for six and a half years, and although there were people in that time who acted like arseholes, it was by no means all of the many housemates I had in that time.
I share with my friend now.
My advice would be to share with people who don't actually own the place you live in; that way you're on equal footing.
