Does anyone watch Law & Order: SVU? See, I'm watching an episode in which there are several seriously bloody awesome female characters, including the criminals who have been allowed proper motives that don't involve jealousy or competition. Is this usual, or am I gonna be disappointed if I watch more?

(I have this tiny accidental crush on Diane Neal, see.)

I quite like it, but some eps can be very disturbing. The guy, Elliot, gets shot a lot, but it never bothers him or leaves a scar.

Okay trying this again, sorry if it posts twice...

It is more usual than not. Casey is one of my favorites, but Olivia Benson and Alex Cabot are tied for first place, hands down. The show doesn't always get it right, and is sometimes problematic, but does very well a large part of the time, enough that I have watched ten seasons of it. So, yeah.

Warning: it can be very triggering at times. But it deals with some very difficult issues in ways that no other show I know does.

I'm seriously impressed by it so far. The issues it tackles are hard hitting, and it's not afraid to allow the characters to be wrong. I love that sometimes there are court cases in which all the key powerful, intelligent and influential characters are women. I pretty like. :)

It's worth watching for Finn and Munch's interaction alone.

This is totally out of the blue, but have you watched the Law and Order UK episodes? The first season went on sale in the US and I adored it.

and yes, I watch a lot of SVU. the answer to your question is, it depends heavily on the season. The first season is kind of uneven in that sometimes they are trying way to hard to freak you out sometimes, but then it evens out. Then there's a bunch of good seasons, and once you get up close to what's currently airing (season...8? 9? I'm not honestly sure) suddenly they start focusing cases on what's going on with the characters, especially Benson and Stabler, and I don't enjoy that at all, but then again, there's much more Munch and Ice T later on to balance that out.

they play the reruns MERCILESSLY on one station here, like to the point where I can turn on that channel basically any time of night and probably SVU is on. Also if you dig the strong female characters then you could try regular Law and Order, seasons 4-7, because there's a few female ADAs in there there that I adore, particular the one Jill Henessey plays, also Angie Harmon later on is good, and so is the one in between but in a less flashy way. Not that all the seasons of L&O aren't good, cause they are, but 4-6 are my absolute favorites because of Henessey's character and also that's when Jack McCoy arrives WHO I LOVE BEYOND REASON.

Er. so, thats probably more than you wanted to know about me and law and order. ps I think criminal intent sucks but i do like chris noth and so occasionally am suckered into one and the girl on there is usually good too.

Yes, and sometimes they will use differences between viewpoints of the key/main/lead characters to showcase the complexity of one or more issues.

I don't know another show that I've watched for this long that I'll gladly keep watching.

I've started midway through season 5 due to aforementioned crush but I admit I'm tempted to watch it all. It is probably the most morally complex crime show I've watched partly because it's not as simple as being on the victim's side. Also the characters are pretty awesome.

At the very least you should go back and see somewhere from S2 to S5.04, because of Alex Cabot. ADA Alexandra Cabot, that is, the predecessor to Casey Novak. Played by Stephanie March, and COMPLETELY AMAZING.

I watched the one where the women raped the stripper because it had diane neal in as well - I was very impressed by Cabot too. I suspect I will disappear into a small SVU shaped hole. :D

5.04 is the one where she leaves the show, and I have to say it is an AMAZINGLY powerful episode. Watch that one if nothing else.

You know what's good? Much as I adore NCIS, and you know I do, on this show people actually genuinely interrupt each other. People interrupt each other with unrelated things. There's not a miracle every week, sometimes the forensics are wrong. Sometimes they're mistimed. The revelation rarely comes just as someone's a)given up or b)said 'we need a miracle'. XD

I watch NCIS for the team dynamic and the ridiculousness and the characters and the boats. The stories, too, but in a very self conscious awareness that they are stories.

This? This is kind of awesome story telling. XD

The ladies are, indeed, awesome but the show is often chock-full of victim blaming. I watch it sporadically, whenever there's a re-run that happens to be on TV when I have nothing else to do, and almost every single time there's a "surprise" twist where it turns out the victim has some ~hidden sinister motive~
