The high cost of undervaluing teachers.

Different country, same problem, especially the issue of blame. All accountability is removed from students and placed on teachers, yet not apparently placed on policy makers etc. Having to constantly justify yourself by test scores when you can't get enough books/pens/paper for the kids to use... I know how damned lucky I have it in the school I'm in, but I cannot plan a single IT lesson due to the lack of computers in the English department. As a result I am technically failing to meet the standards required of me as a teacher (although, thank everything, this is not reflected in my assessments).

Teachers have it shit enough that everyone seems to be wanting to scramble up the ladder into management positions; somehow this leads to schools having nine or so deputy heads - who do not take on a full load of teaching - and often using English teachers to teach science, or maths teachers to teach English because there aren't enough members of staff. Personally I have no interest in management; my career plan is pretty much to improve behaviour management and pupil engagement and to move across to more and more challenging schools. To be honest, though, I am not sure that's workable.

Broodiness can get fucked, but bloody hell do I have house envy right now. The possibility of getting a deposit together and owning a place of my own, on the salary I will be pulling in for at least the next few years, is so remote as to be laughable.

Apparently in the US it is national teacher appreciation day? It is to laugh hollowly.
