Jan. 1st, 2004 12:28 pmSee now it actually *is* New Year. And I have no hangover, which, considering the amount I had to drink last night, is quite phenomenal. Hurrah for me!
I have made resolutions, believe it or not, even though I know that I'm *extremely* unlikely to keep them:
1) I will write whatever I want. I will not write for an audience- I'll write for me.
2) I will write something (no matter how short or crap) every single day. I really need the practice.
They look so achievable, just sitting there, don't they? Good for them. =)
I also intend to read more this year. I read a lot last year, but I was in a bit of a funk for most of the year, so what I read tended to be the literary equivalent of comfort food- books like LotR, the Potters, the Discworlds, Neverwhere and American Gods, and the Crow Road. Over and over again.
I want to make a start on Patrick O'Brien's books. The library here doesn't have many of them, but our local in Cardiff probably will.
My two beautiful books of Greek myths I bought from a charity shop.
The Hobbit. I really should, shouldn't I?
The Elephant Vanishes: Haruki Murakami. I've only read one of the stories from the book, but I loved the style.
The Vintner's Luck -- Elizabeth Knox, because I've been reccomended it a thousand times.
1984, which I got for my birthday.
The Encyclopedia of Unusual Sex Practices, which I also got for my birthday. Excellent material for the squick100 communities.
There're probably more, but I forget. If you can add to the list of books I should read, I'd be grateful. =)
Also... a little about why I hate New Year.
New Year is a hideous occasion. It's just another night as far as I'm concerned, but there's a huge amount of fuss made and I feel obliged to join in.
The worst thing about it is the pressure to find someone to be with, and the stigma attached to being alone. The countdown to midnight is hellish, and it's really only recently that I've taken a stand and told people I don't care, rather than settling for some random stranger in a bid to appear "normal".
It's worse than Valentine's day, because no one *forces* you out on Valentine's day. You're allowed to be single and bitter and retire to your room with a good book and some chocolate. Not on New Years, oh no- because the holiday is not ostensibly about sex, so you have to join in.
I also protest at the amount I'm obliged to drink. I don't want to spend that amount of money, but if everyone's buying rounds and won't take no for an answer... I'm a student, for goodness sake! Leave me alone!
I actually had quite a good time last night. I sat and bitched with dreddyMatt about Caz-girl's many conquests (he has unrequited lust there), and attempted to ignore another mate who was feeling sorry for herself. That sounds mean, but there are only so many hours you can spend talking to someone who's not prepared to make any effort to talk to people before you have to give in.
Also met a nice young man who I talked about LotR and tattoos with. He took my number, and he's not gonna text me, but I really don't care. I'm not hungover, so all is right with the world.
Wow. That really turned into a long entry. (cuts) Sorry. I don't mean to bitch quite so much!
