"Reid." Derek's mouth was curling into a slow grin, with none of the mockery that Reid had been expecting. "I'm not asking for more than - " he spread his arms a little, just the slightest more admission to it than a shrug.
"But that's what I mean." Reid pushed his glasses up, rewrapped his arms around himself, feeling like there was something close to a mile and a half of them despite how physically impossible he knew that to be. "I just - where do all the limbs go?"
"The limbs?" Derek was laughing a little now and Reid was more than willing to mirror him, mouth curled into the half-embarrassed tilt his team always seemed to cause. "You some kind of starfish I don't know about?"
"Well if I were a starfish," Reid seized on, with more than a little relief, "odds are I'd be one you hadn't heard of. Did you know there are - "
"Reid."
" - over 2,000 species of starfish? The Ancient Egyptians actually based their heiroglyph for star on - "
"Reid."
" - the starfish or sea stars that inhabited the red sea." Reid cleared his throat awkwardly, aware suddenly of how close Derek had gotten. "Hi."
"Stop over thinking," Derek said, tapping him gently on the forehead, "and bring it in here."
It really was almost as easy as that.
