Amazon UK is currently having a very cheap Kindle sale, and I happened to have a £10 voucher kicking around from a study I assisted in. I love it when books are that cheap, because it's an opportunity to satisfy curiosity that wouldn't otherwise be indulged. You'd think that using the library would be an excellent way of dealing with that, but unfortunately I have a habit of accidentally keeping library books for months after the due date, and therefore pay more than I would if I'd bought them.

My haul:

The Sherlock Holmes Miscellany, which sounds like a rather pointless book of minutiae but potentially useful if I ever get around to writing what I mean to.

Naval Miscellany, a far more useful sounding book that had some good reviews. I love dabbling in history and am dreadful at sustained study or remembering useful chunks of what I've read, so I'm quite looking forward to wandering in and out.

An Encyclopedia of Naval History, yes, okay, my interests are reasonably easy to divine.

Sex and Punishment: Four Thousand Years of Judging Desire. I am hoping for lots of witches.

The Etymologicon: a Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language. I love words, okay, and you may piss right off Alan Bennett.

Kafka's Soup: A Complete History of World Literature in 17 Recipes. I've rather wanted this one ever since I first saw it, so sweet win for 99p.

From the Mouth of the Whale. This one had some truly exceptional reviews quoted, and appears to be on the list purely because it is Icelandic, so I'm rather looking forward to reading it.

No More Silly Love Songs: A Realist's Guide to Romance. Judgement is being reserved on this one; it sounded appealing but we shall see.

The 7 Habit of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change. I have the conviction that someone at some point has recommended this to me, but cannot for the life of me remember who. It'll probably go unread, because I always mean well.

Raising Steam. PTERRY! for 99p!
