May. 6th, 2014 07:41 pmThere was a shriek from outside and Rob lurched upright without thinking, his heart going a mile a minute and his cup of tea almost taking a tumble off the arm of his ratty chair, but Beaton's hand was raised.
"You dead, hen?" he bellowed.
"Not dead, da!" a high voice yelled back, and Beaton grinned, the lines of his face built around it.
"Well can you not try a little harder? I've only dinner enough for Mr Smith here."
There was a noise of wordless annoyance from outside and then a crash that didn't phase Beaton even slightly, not if the laughter in his eyes was any indication.
"There's nothing out there will hurt her too bad," he said, low and comforting as he leaned in. "And anything else she's charmed against it."
They'd spent months on Rob's training; his lip didn't curl at all.
"Thank you, Mr Beaton," he said, and made another meaningless check mark on his pad. He didn't know what Fennick had been talking about. Killing them wouldn't trouble him at all.
