In the Patrick O'Brian books. Stephen Maturin is an absolutely fantastic character, plus he's played by Paul Bettany, *tasty* man. *g*

Movie!Maturin is highly tasty; you should see it for that reason alone. (Though it's a decent flick anyway.)

I know...I've been dying to see the movie too.

I first knew Maturin was my kind of guy in the opening of Master and Commander, where he slaps Jack down for being one of those people who thinks a show requires audience participation.

Yes! Paul Bettany is quite wonderful and the whole cast just gels. Lot's of slashy vibes, but a really good story too. They even got the sailing scenes right.
