Well, it's the third time I've wanted to restart the year. Once a month, regular. 'course, it's entirely possible that years don't work like that, in which case I've been skipping ahead and it's already 2010.

It's cool here, guys. There're flying cars, and shit!

Watching a lot of House, marvelling at the amount of GAY between House and Wilson, wondering if anyone can point me to recs. Fanfic makes the world go 'round, guys. Or, like, away. I'll be making a few rec posts of my own at some point, soon as I can get myself organised. So, y'know, 2010. (And everyone's wearing silver!)

I've been tagged for the five favourite stories thing, and I'm gonna as soon as I read through my stuff again. It actually genuinely surprised me how many of my stories I still actually like enough to consider. I have a whole bunch of tags to read through and mentally criticise, so that post'll be appearing sometime later.

So apiphile tagged me for that 'what're your favourites of your stories' meme thing. And I had a look through, and my favourites weren't actually the ones that I thought would be my favourites, when it came down to it. Like, say, Rearrangement, which I was so dreadfully proud of at the time - because it was my first Proper Sized Story - is a decent enough story but doesn't really stand out. And when it does it's only because I bastardised canon.

So these are the five; and as is my wont, I'm going to talk for entirely too long about why I like them.

Autumn Showers: Harry Potter, R/S, G
This one I like because it epitomises my style. I don't have much of a style because I don't do much in the way of writing, but if I do it's this - smallish sections containing flashbacks, small descriptions that say something about the character, nothing in the way of plot, and a neat little device that ties it up all the way through. I think this one was a particularly effective example; it nails my interpretations of Remus and Sirius, it has a nice wistful tone to it, and it's not too entirely maudlin. Plus I love Remus, of course.

Pale Green: Harry Potter, Harry gen
I like this one because it was a game that I used to play with my best friend when I was about... oh, eight or nine? I played it with my brother, too - my friend went on holidays and we minded their house, which had a swimming pool. It reminds me of how the simplest things can be an adventure, and that doesn't have to stop just because you're a grown up, now.

The Dance of the Red Death: Good Omens, War/Famine, PG
This one isn't really a departure from my usual style but is more a twisting of it. It was an experiment and I think it was pretty successful - usually my use of language is more subtle, more... sensible and comfy - evocative without being noticeable. This was more playing with words, trying to get exactly five hundred, and trying to work out what love could be without humanity but with added years. I like it.

Space Invaders: Good Omens - Johnny Maxwell crossover, gen
I adore writing the Them. It's an absolute treat to write the Them because their mental voices are incredibly clear to me, and I have theories about how they grew up and what they're like as students and everything. I could write pretty much any prompt for the Them, I suspect - and the same is probably true for Johnny and co. Terry Pratchett has a fantastic way of writing the circuitous logic of children, and it's a mental voice that I think I can do well. And just - Greasy Johnson and Wobbler Johnson. I had to. There's a much longer crossover I'd like to write some day, I think, but not right now. Also? GO crossovers in general tend to make me happy.

When You Are Old: Milliways, gen
Self indulgence in fic form. Because romance to me isn't Romeo and Juliet, it's getting old together and bitching all the way. This is a future fic for the roleplaying game milliways_bar, and it's - like Autumn Showers - a perfect illustration of my general style. This one gets picked over countless others because I think I got it right. This one works really well with the way I tell stories, and I'm proud of how it came out.
