You know you get those little niggles? Turns of phrase, or cliches, or character traits that make you want to spork someone?

Summer hols.

I *have* never, and *will* never call them the summer hols. And I'm as British as they come.

Summer hols is Enid Blyton and misogyny and ginger beer and no one laughing at you when you call characters Dick and Fanny. Summer hols is lashings of boiled eggs and camping out making beds out of *heather* (which never sounded comfortable) and jolly good and chaps and short trousers.

Summer holidays. Or even just summer, really. Everyone knows the holidays are there. Just please. *Please*. No hols.

I am reminded of the last words of "The Many Lives of Christopher Chant" (or however that's called.)

"'Hols,' she said. 'In the books, they always called them 'hols.'"

(Although that does beg the question of if 'hols' is excusable if written as part of a period story.)

I *love* that book! I actually developed a crush on a boy called Chris Chant purely because of that book, and another one with the same characters that I can't remember the name of. *g*

And yes, it's allowable in period fic, though I will exercise my right not to expose myself to it. It's when it attacks me unawares in a Harry Potter fic that I have to have a minor tantrum. *g*

Hols. yes, it's very Malory Towers.. Hockey sticks and crushes on your Gym Teachers.

I can't believe ANY child would say hols in this day and age until they were at Westminster College!

Golly Fanny - where's Dick?

He's with George, who has gender identification problems, and Timmy, who thinks he's a dog.

Gosh.

Gimme your British-ism niggles! All of 'em. I have a need to know.

Okay, so "hols". Didn't know that was antiquated. I know that no one calls the U.S. "the States" and I've read most of the Brit picking threads on F.A. and LJ, but I like to hear personal pet peeves. (*writes "The phrase 'Personal Pet Peeves' does not make me want to write Poltersmut." 2000 times on back of hand*)

Hi!

This may sound completely random, but I saw your "Wah!" frog icon on a comment on a post on my flist and I just wanted to say that, excuse my language, it scared the fucking shit out of me.

Because, you see, I have this asinine roommate who has a collection of frog toys that look *exactly* like that and they scare me, so seeing the same frog, on what I though was a safe haven online made me blink.

Thank you for putting up with my digression.

*carefully doesn't use frog icon*
