Part Two

"Aah," said Snake, and nodded wisely, because it was something he rather liked to do. "What you need, then, is a stone."

"A stone?" Bird looked dubious, to say the least.

"Quite," said Snake decisively, and nodded wisely again. "Follow me."

Bird simply could not get comfortable. He'd tried lying on one side and then the other, his wings carefully extended before him or behind. Lying on his back meant his head was rather lower than his feet, which made the sky spin in a quite extraordinary manner, and lying on his front... well, he'd never before noticed quite how many feather he had. He rolled off the stone and stood up.

"You know, I really don't think that's what it is."

Snake, who'd been watching with more than a little amusement, stretched languidly on his own stone.

"Your loss. Basking is the best thing in life, except maybe sleeping." He brightened up a bit. "Hey, maybe that's it!" He wriggled off his rock, and slithered over to his hole. Bird came over to stand by him. They both looked at the hole, which was rather narrow, then looked at each other.

"Or maybe-"

"-really don't think-"

"-needs a bit of a tidy anyway, you know how it-"

"-quite satisfied with my hollow, thanks all the-"

"-yes."

"Quite."

Bird shook out his feathers, and turned to go. Snake noticed frustratedly that he didn't turn towards his comfortable hollow, but instead towards the places he liked to watch the water and think.

"I'll be off. You must be wanting a nap."

Snake shook his head. "And you must be wanting to sigh, some more. Very well, Bird. I'll see you later, I suppose." He watched Bird leave, and curled up on his rock, thinking hard.

This is going to be a lot longer than I'd thought. Ah well. Sorry about that, Sophie.

Because God forbid that you should write any more of this, you monster.

Dude, I want to have children just so that, when they ask me for a bedtime story, I can tell them this.

...Or, on second thought, I'll be the kid.

*squees delightedly and runs to get Teddy before bouncing into bed, ready for the next installment*
