mentioning no names

I don't care. I'm sorry, but I don't care. I'm not interested in what your RP character is wearing. Unless it's something like a seven foot wide sombrero, in which case, okay, I can see why you'd mention it. It might prompt a O.O reaction or two. Depends on the character, I guess. But please, seriously. I Don't Care.
It's overthinking. It's... SF writer syndrome. It's where you've designed it so carefully in your head you want someone to worship you for it. You want people to see things exactly as you see them. I don't read SF because of the over description complex. I'm far more interested in the things that aren't stated, the random moments and hints that populate Neil Gaiman's work, for instance- stuff he could no doubt talk at length about, stuff that he gives a slight mention of, stuff that you can look into yourself, make up your own stories for.
If I wanted someone else's vision, I'd watch TV.
Credit your readers with a little imagination, please?

Date: 2004-09-20 07:48 pm (UTC)I'm not saying fanart is bad. Fanart is an interpretation. And wildly majorly different fanart makes me happy because I love seeing other peoples' takes on the characters. It's how I can seperate my Lupin from Thewpin.
Have I said too much? *g*

Date: 2004-09-21 03:33 am (UTC)Except that's not all we need to know - or all we do know. From my spotty recollection, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that:
So not only do we now know that Rincewind is threadbare and looks rather ratlike, we can be pretty assured that both his hat and his robes are threadbare1.
And this is important.
Because - say you're playing Rincewind, and someone else poses:
Foo MacBar, the Scottish pickpocket, slides his hand into Rincewind's threadbare jeans pocket and pulls out the wizard's threadbare wallet; but, alas, he has forgotten about the threadbare chain2 attaching the threadbare wallet to Rincewind's threadbare belt, and thus falls flat on his face atop Rincewind's threadbare loafers.
then unless you've decided that it's casual day or Rincewind finally decided that his robes needed a wash, you're going to take issue with the fact that this Other Player has decided that your character is wearing jeans, loafers, and a wallet with a chain on.
Excessive description is, I agree, a pain in the tuchus, but you can at least give the other players something to work with.
1 As well as the rest of him, although frankly how we'd know about certain parts of him is well beyond me.
2 Chains are threadbare rather by definition, actually, but we won't tell Foo's player that and spoil his (somewhat repetitive) fun.

Date: 2004-09-21 08:05 am (UTC)For Nny: Heh. I typically agree, but there are some characters where describing their whole... ensemble seems in-character for them. Then it works, and it feels like part of the scene.
