Drumknott had his suspicions about the new clerk. For a clerk, he seemed suspiciously manly. He had a suspicious tan. His voice was suspiciously deep. His stubble, Drumknott suspected, was extremely suspicious.
Plus, Drumknott noticed, he drank black coffee.
It was unnatural in a clerk.
The clerk raised his eyes and rumbled, “See something you like?”
Drumknott straightened his tie. “I like to see work, Mr. -- Mr. -- ”
“It’s just Andre.”
Aha! A first name!
Madness.
Drumknott realized he was wearing his triumphant face in public, so he made his excuses and bustled away.
