And, because I'm feeling wordy today: that answer might be read to misconstrue the way I feel about the situation. It isn't the sex that I mind; it's the gratuitous sex. Sex can be used for character development, for story development, for exposition - heck, you can have an entire story about people having sex and it won't really bother me if getting the characters into bed is not the sole reason for the story.

This also, incidentally, applies to stories where it's clear from the writing that the author's approach was "I want to get X and Y in bed together, but I feel bad about just writing straight smut so I'm going to hang this on a framework so that I can say 'no, really, this is a story about...'".

Loving characters and loving canon are very much the same thing for me - I don't think of them as separate.
