“You’re real.” Silence, then a quick sigh. “Well, you are. You might not have much of a life, but you have a real bloody job and aren’t a uni student or anything and that’s normal.”
“Normal. Me.”
“…ok, not really. But, god, Andre, I don’t care that you’re fucked up seven ways to Sunday or damaged or whatever, you’re just…Andre. Real. Not fucking crazy.”
“That’s debatable.”
“I think of the two of us, I’m the only one who has seen the inside of a mental hospital.”
“Skazz!”
“Told ya I was crazy. Once when I was seventeen, once when I was nineteen. I don’t hear voices or anything, but I’m not right in the head.” Softly. “That’s I why I need you, don’t you see? You’re real, involved with the real world instead of theory and money like the rest of them. I have no idea what you see in me, babe, but…please, Andre; I’m not going to leave you for someone else. Not in the foreseeable future, any way. Everyone else I know, they’re just…not solid, not connected. I start losing grip, and then before I know I’ll be back again eating with plastic cutlery.”
Another silence, and then, “You eat with plastic cutlery?”
A soft laugh, amused and mocking. “Yeah, it’s a perpetual fucking picnic.”
“I can’t see you at a picnic, kid.”
“Oh, you’d be surprised. But yeah, not really my thing.”
This it is Andre who laughs. “Ah, Skazz. I do love you, you know? You’re stuck with me, even if you do have to eat with plastic.”
Quietly, “Love ya too, babe,” and he bends his head over his guitar so Andre can’t see his smile.
