The coin seemed to almost float over the back of the man's hand, dark fingers barely moving. Shadow was almost too young to comment on it, wasn't much of a one for talking as a kid anyway, just watched silently. The dark man in his tattered finery, black frock coat with buckles and badges and magpie sparkles, laughed without noise.

Shadow could tell his mama wasn't happy about him being there, but sometimes they got visitors like that. They said they were looking for his dad, which was stupid because Shadow didn't think he'd ever had one, but they always made mama nervous anyway. Even when she said she couldn't help them.

The tall dark man pushed himself away from the wall, flipping the coin to Shadow, who watched carefully as it span through the air and brought his hand up at just the right time to catch it. The man picked up a book from the table, the one with the cat with the unsuitable footwear, and showed it to Shadow, tapping the cover.

"You're ever in London, look me up."

It's one of those fragments that Shadow doesn't quite remember.
