Apr. 19th, 2006 12:58 amI don't like watching porn.
Shocking, eh?
I think everyone in my RL assumes that I enjoy watching porn, because of the amount of time I spend either talking about sex, interpreting people's comments in a wrong and immoral manner, or speculating that people (or, indeed, fictional characters. Or cartoon characters. Or certain celebrities. Male friends. Household appliances) are shagging.
Sex is probably one of those things that's amazingly fun, once you're actually participating. But it looks bloody ridiculous. Like those people who roll cheeses down hills, and chase them. Exhilirating, not something one talks about in public, and potentially damaging.
I don't know. I don't think the human body is a particularly attractive thing. Certain parts of it, very much yes - I like breasts, hands, forearms, necks. But I also like the way people look in clothes, and will find someone far more attractive, nine times out of ten, when they're in a good suit rather than their underwear. Paul Bettany is a man who knows the value of a good suit, and that coupled with his excellent sense of humour is the basis for the majority of my crush on him.
I do not think genitalia is particularly attractive. And most of the sex that porn stars indulge in looks... desensitized, in a way. Painful, almost. Frantic. I think... it's all about the pleasure, the sensation, which is fine enough in its own way, I suppose. But if it's all about the physical sensation, then you might as well buy a vibrator.
I'm a romantic at heart. I've come to terms with this. Sex, for me, is connection. Potentially - always potentially; I've not done the whole sex thing. But it's more than just fingers and tongues and various implements.
*shrugs*
I'd rather read a long story with an inordinate amount of sexual tension followed by a kiss. I'm not interested in PWPs, either... if there's no emotion there it might as well be a manual for putting together some sort of Swedish bookshelf. Insert dowel (a) into slot (b). I can get way more satisfaction out of a well-characterised angel and demon snarking in a bookshop and making each other tea than shagging for the sake of shagging.
Maybe I'm immature. Maybe I'm just a big girl.
Whatever.
Anyway, there's me living up to my disclaimer, for once. Happy to discuss. ;)
Oh, and mum? If you're still reading? I totally warned you.

Date: 2006-04-18 05:43 pm (UTC)I? Very, very, very much agree. And I think my trying to find icons for
She is far, far prettier with her clothes ON. Otherwise, I'm just kinda wincing for her pride and want to put a blanket on her.

Date: 2006-04-18 05:43 pm (UTC)I would much much rather see someone in clothes, because what's hidden and then slowly revealed is so much more interesting than something that's just put out for anyone to see. The brain is the most important sex organ.
I agree with you - sex is all about connecting with someone, with giving and receiving, and basically, enjoying the things your funny-looking body can do and feel.
You're not immature at all. You just have good taste.

Date: 2006-04-18 05:52 pm (UTC)I look at it this way. There's a hypothetical book with a sex scene in it, and that sex scene has the ability to reduce me to quivering bliss every time I read it. Now, you could make a film out of that book, and film the sex scene with the two actors that I would say are absolutely perfect for the roles, and the sex scene is done 100% according to the book. It's as if the characters stepped off the page and came to life and did everything exactly as I'd imagined they would.
I can tell you right now that seeing the sex scene on film would leave me cold.
So yeah. Porn on film doesn't do it for me. And most of the time, other forms of erotica don't do it for me, either.

Date: 2006-04-18 07:52 pm (UTC)I think I am in a minority within my sex.
My sister likes porn, too; perhaps it is genetic?
I have to say, I'll always have a preference for literary porn, because words are sex. And I'm not so much into porn as films as porn as pictures and words and such.
Hm.
And, I have to say, there are sex scenes in movies that are just pure bliss, but they are rare. Mostly, the actors just look kind of drugged. =)) Angelina Jolie's sex scenes are incredibly hot, and are the exception to the rule.
Hm!
So.
I guess I'm done? Blah, scattered.
Oh! And, I like the dick. :D I even like how it looks. It's kind of silly, but by God. It's also good fun. :>

Date: 2006-04-19 12:03 am (UTC)As for bits? Well, they're just bits. I'll admit that there might be a bit of a bias for me here. I was raised in a house of medical professionals, so I've kind of always seen anatomy as just being that. Sometimes a bit is just a bit.
But when that action potential is reached, well then all bets are off.
People are attractive, bits are just bits.

Date: 2006-04-19 12:16 am (UTC)I mean, to give two contrasting examples - Aziraphale/Crowley is a ship that I can see occurring naturally after canon, and I love fics that show that. But because I can believe in the ship so easily, and take it practically as a matter of course that, barring unforeseen obstacles, they are/have at one point been/will eventually become involved, a well-written and at least mostly-plausible PWP is wonderful.
Conversely, in HP, my big guilty pleasure is/was Snape/Lupin. However, given canon, it's just so damn implausible that unless a fic was going the way of the UST-angry-outburst-devolving-into-angry-sex (and even then), I simply cannot stomach a PWP. I need it led-into, built up, and made plausible; otherwise it's just plain OOC - it isn't the characters I love, and thus might just as well be anonymous porn.

Date: 2006-04-19 12:33 am (UTC)Also, I am so with you on the Angelina Jolie sex scenes. Even that ridiculous one in Mr. & Mrs. Smith was FWAH.

Date: 2006-04-19 01:55 am (UTC)Then again, perhaps it's that my definition of PWPs varies according to how well I know the fandom. My canon knowledge is naturally going to affect how I see the actions and reactions of the characters - if the PWP is a missing scene type, then I automatically fill in all the relevant details to get them to that point.
I suppose it's a writing-quality thing, more than anything - I don't have the confidence to attempt PWPs (unless they involve manacles and are for someone specific, I suppose XD) and make them believable. If someone can make them believable, I'll consider it a story.
Aah, Snape/Lupin. Those were the days. I only ever found about four fics that worked for me, there.

Date: 2006-04-19 02:00 am (UTC)Sex scenes in movies will always do more for me than actual porn because, again, I know and/or care about the characters. There's some sort of emotional involvement there.
I mean, I dare say that when I actually get around to the whole sex thing, I'll think it's the best thing ever. It's just that when it'd divorced of all context, I don't find nudity humungously attractive.
Anonymous genitalia is just funny-lookin'. If it's attached to someone you feel something about, or if it's mentally associated with good feelings, or whatever, I can see that it'd be a different matter. Just, right now? Not for me.

Date: 2006-04-19 02:04 am (UTC)I have a much more up front attitude towards sex mentally than the majority of my female friends... but then, most of they's having it. It's very odd. Once I start having sex I suspect I'll be a fucking nightmare.

Date: 2006-04-19 02:06 am (UTC)I'm kinda getting to the point where I yell SCREW THE STATISTICS and just own up to what I, personally, like. That's the part that matters.
I am using this icon because I haven't used it yet and OMGAPPROPRIATE.

Date: 2006-04-19 02:08 am (UTC)Yes, precisely. Which is why porn does veryverylittle for me. They're not people, they're the housing for bits. And bits look somewhat ridiculous, out of context.
I don't mean to be OMGSOJUDGEMENTAL of porn stars - I'm sure they're lovely people. But I don't know that. Y'know?

Date: 2006-04-19 06:50 am (UTC)So -- despite obviously having done the real thing *g* -- I am totally on your side here: porn looks ridiculous and doesn't turn me on in the least. I think this is also why women who find the thought of two men together really erotic would rather read/write slash stories written by other women than watch gay porn movies. And honestly? *grins* I have read PWPs written by gay males, and SORRY GUYS, doesn't work for me either.
