You know what one of my very favourite things on American sci-fi shows is?
When the actors have quite clearly not been given explicit directions. This is especially clear when you look at extras - see Star Trek and the people wandering around in the background with clipboards - but also you get it with main characters on occasion, especially if they're only important for one episode. You know, when they've just been told to futz around randomly with a plant for a bit until the other actor delivers their line.
It's not just on American sci-fi - you can see it in Neighbours and Eastenders and the like, but this happens to be my area of interest right now.
It makes me happy. :D
