The acting, the plots, the writing, the overarching concepts are all more advanced, more developed and generally better. In fact it's so good that I don't feel the need to read other people's attempts at it.
I exclude, here, the crew in
milliways_bar. They impress me endlessly with their plots and crossovers and attention to detail, and for that I'm absolutely grateful for them.
But aside from that? I don't feel any need to seek out Firefly fanfic. It doesn't need any improvement. The team dynamic is such that I wouldn't have relationships any other way. I'd love there to be more, of course, but what more I'd want there to be I'd want from Joss. It's a canon that would make me hugely demanding, were I looking for fanfic, and I don't think those demands would be likely to be met.
SG:A, on the other hand? Is ridiculous. It's silly and frequently intensely cheesy and every now and again makes you wince at the concepts, the makeup, the clichéd aliens. But the idea behind it allows endless scope for inventiveness and the characters are utterly fabulous. Every now and again, quite against your will it bowls you over because you hadn't even noticed that you loved the characters that much until you're nearly in tears over them. Until you're sitting on the edge of your seat and bouncing agitatedly and yelling at the screen and cheering loud enough to make your family call you a freak when someone or other saves the day. And because of that it's attracted the most amazing writers. Some of the fanfic that's been produced is astounding, and there's such a high volume that you are guaranteed to not only find something that fits you, but to find something that fits you and is superbly written.
I've been reading and watching the canon and the fandom for... what, a week? And I have yet to read a fic that I didn't think was excellent in its way. I'm not saying the back-button hasn't been used, it's been getting a very good workout, but there really is just that much good stuff.
Good Omens is still where my heart is, without question, and will probably be where I still produce most fanfic if I ever get off my arse and start writing again. But I haven't felt this excited about a fandom in a while.
:D
