Mar. 11th, 2007 10:28 pmThis is the Buttercross. Landmark in the Winchester high street, and tends to be somewhere that people meet up with people. Generally draped in students; I spent a lot of my time here during my college years.
The rest of the time was spent here, in the cathedral grounds. This includes some time that should have been spent in lessons.
Yes, I am aware that I was an unusually lucky bastard, when it came to colleges.

Seriously, does this need more commentary? It's beautiful and I love it. It's also £4 to get in, and I didn't have long before I was meeting
This one's for
Flying buttresses, what a wonderful phrase...
These are the houses for staff members of the Pilgrim's School. Which staff members in particular I couldn't tell you, but judging by the Headmaster's House at Winchester College, the Headmaster should have something more splendiforous.
This is - you see the bridge, there? That's St Swithuns on Kingsgate, a ridiculously tiny church that I love completely disproportionately to its size. According to a plaque on the wall it's first noted in the 13th century; in the sixteenth it was rented to a bloke who kept his hogs at one end while his children were born at the other. (That's not very far apart.) I'd have gone inside for pictures but it's a Sunday today, so. Maybe next time.
Finally, the Round Table. I'm sorry it's so unclear - my pictures of it turned out universally awful, my attempts at capturing the enormous family tree and beautiful gates at the other end far worse. It was constructed in the 13th century, apparently, and used 108 pieces of oak. You can't see from the picture, but it has the names of the knights around the edge, with little notations under the names of a few. Lancelot's says 'Beware'.
There were more pictures but they're of personal interest, more.
...this is where you tell me that these ones are, as well.

Er, nope. Because I live in Winchester... Virginia. USA. I believe the two towns are actually affiliated with each other in a sister-town sort of way. I do know that the Town Hall has the Winchester, England flag hanging up. So it's interesting to me to see these pictures of a town I've never been to and yet sort of have. ish.
um. right, tired and incoherent, I go away now.
