1) Vimes is large. He contains multitudes. Nearly everything in his life has at least two positions, at least two directions it's pulling him in. He hates damned vampires but thinks Sally's a competent officer and Otto Chriek is far more use than he lets on. He loathes the size of the force now, the amount of work and men and crime there is now, wishes for a return to the days where it was just a man and a bell, and at the same time he can't help but be damned proud of the thing he's a part of. There have only ever been two things in his life that don't pull him apart at the seams, that make the world solid, and he loves Sybil enough that he gave up the other one for her.
2) He never wanted to leave the city, like Fred, never saw the appeal of a farm with chickens nailed around the door. He's always vaguely dreamed of opening up some sort of restaurant, somewhere someone else can do the cooking and he can put his boots up, drink endless cups of good coffee, watch the world go by without suspecting every last one of the bastards of having an ulterior motive. (In his dreams he's capable of doing that.)
3) He has mentioned - to Fred, Nobby, Carrot - that he expects Vetinari to kill him one day. The truth is, he hopes he will. Once he gets too powerful, or too nosy, or more trouble than he's worth he knows that he will have to disappear; he hopes that he means enough to Vetinari, that he's important enough, that it's made personal.
