PROBLEM

It would appear the neighbours have got wireless, or something, and my router has an identity crisis. They have a secured signal which requires a password, it tells me, only their signal is much stronger than the one from downstairs in my house. (The computer I'm currently at, which has an annoyingly quiet keyboard.) So my computer takes ages to connect to the internet, and when it is connected it keeps disconnecting and only offering their signal as possible connecty place.

This? Bad.

If I can't get this sorted I will be scarce to non-existent over the next month or so, until I move to Bath. Needless to say I will eat my own head off in the mean time, so if anyone knows how I can prioritise my own wireless signal or something so this doesn't happen I will love you forever.

This is probably the universe attempting to hint at something, y'know.

If you can change the order of preferred wireless networks -- it's somewhere under internet options, or wireless connection thingamabobbers, on mine -- that's saved me in the past.

The signal range is divided (with overlaps) into channels. Change the channel of your wireless router. I'd suggest going a good few numbers away from whatever it is now (presumably the default?) to avoid this overlap.

Don't forget to match the channel change on all the computers or other devices that you are using on the wireless network.

What Shati said. I found mine under:

-> Wireless Network Connection Status
-> View Wireless Networks
-> Change the order of preference for connecting to networks

:[ I had a wireless problem. I was so desperate I ran a cord across my living room to the computer so that it would be non-wireless. This was, like, a year ago.

It is still there. I am afraid to unplug. *shame* But I think it's a very different issue, more along the lines of Linksys and Macintosh not liking each other than an invading foreign signal.

If this is a universal hint, there will be backlash at the universe the likes of Strikethrough. RAR.
