People angry about renewed strikethrough should read this.

I'm not excusing livejournal; even if what they are doing is justified, the way they are doing it indicates a lack of respect for everyone who was hurt/upset/angered last time this happened. It is another perspective on the situation, though, that I think is worth the read, mainly because this situation is more than likely to happen again wherever else you may go.

But I also believe that the last thing fandom can afford, in this current legal and political climate, is to gain a reputation with the people who make and enforce these laws as "those people who promote child abuse and call it fiction or fantasy". And again, I'm not talking about on LJ; I'm talking as a whole.

I think more people need to make this argument. The video game industry, for instance, is being blamed for everything from childhood obesity rates to Columbine and Virginia Tech. World of Warcraft only really seems to make the news when people are starving and neglecting their kids to play for days at a stretch. Older Harry Potter fans are still seen as sort of kooky but mostly harmless, but that reputation will sink like a brick if any HP fan over the age of 14 gets slapped with the automatic label of child molestor in the public mind.

That is a very sensible post. I've seen one of the pieces of art that caused the deletions in contention and can see how it might be perceived to show a minor in a graphically sexual situation.

The INTENTION to portray an encounter between two consenting adults doesn't, sadly, count when the person with their finger on the deletion button is either disgusted themselves or being directed by superiors who are disgusted or willing to appease those who purport to be disgusted.
