Ten Pop Culture References You Expect Your Nearest and Dearest to Get

Not so much 'expect to get' as 'ought to know, dammit'. :D

1. Jack, you have debauched my sloth!

2. Yes, master Falhurst, I'm well aware a good fonging is on the way.

3. Oh. I am gonna curl up in bed with the largest sandwich I can find.

4. I can't come to the phone right now, I'm eating corn chips and masturbating. Please leave a message.

5. I mean, you'd never *know* you were in a box, would you? It would be just like you were asleep in a box. Not that I'd like to sleep in a box, mind you. Not without any air. You'd wake up dead for a start, and then where would you be? In a box. That's the bit I don't like, frankly.

6. We're two grown men with important jobs who are standing in their underwear. Let's sing a song.

7. The sweep! I crushed down my rising hopes. I said, No - it is a thunderstorm, a small earthquake, or at most a destitute cow dying by inches in the chimney. I dared not court disappointment. It is so long since I was taken into anybody's confidence about a sweep.

8. His philosophy was a mixture of three famous schools -- the Cynics, the
Stoics and the Epicureans -- and summed up all three of them in his famous
phrase, "You can't trust any bugger further than you can throw him, and
there's nothing you can do about it, so let's have a drink."

9. You ever feel like you don't know who you are? Like if you weren't around somebody or had
somebody wasn't around you, that you wouldn't be you. Or at least not the you that you think you are. You know, you ever feel like that?

10. Buggre Alle this for a Larke I amme sick to mye Hart of typefettinge.

...man, I am so late for work. *flees*

Definitely know 1, 3, 8, 9, 10. I saw 2, like, a week or so ago but could only work it out from context.

4, 5, 6 all sound familiar -- is 5 from Traders? 6 might well be Sports Night (there is canonical pants-stealing, after all) but I wouldn't put money on it.

And 7 I can't guess. :(

Having now googled #5

Hah! Traders, Tom Stoppard, what's the difference? I mean, really? (I now want to see JFlan and DHew in that play. It would be a work of glory.)

*giggles* I think I recognise 1 as Patrick O'Brien, is 2 Geoffrey Chaucer to Wat in Knight's Tale? 8 is a bit of Pterry, talking about Didactylos [trans. 2 fingers] from Small Gods and 10 is from Good Omens. The rest has me baffled.

3. Rodney, SGA
9. I THINK that's Ray K from Due South
10. Hee, definitely the Buggre Alle This bible from Good Omens.

I feel like I ought to know a bunch of the other ones, particularly 5, 6 and 8, but I can't place them.

Okay, having skimmed everyone else's answers, 5 is def R&G Are Dead, 6 is Sports Night, and 8 is Small Gods. (I was fairly certain it was Pterry but not which.) I KNEW I knew them!
