Just got a sudden urge to have Rodney refer to Sheppard - snidely, of course - as a 'practitioner of Hair Origami'.

Have a wireless mouse now, since the old one kept dropping its ball. It's kind of freaking me out by actually doing what I want it to.

If you read SG:A at all, indy_go has written a really lovely story called Half-life which you should go read.

It has a really wonderful sense of place to it, which is something I envy horribly and am trying to make myself aware of in my own writing. It's vaguely difficult, of course, coming from this side of the ocean, plus I'm not a very... I don't know. Sensual writer? My writing's entirely too matter-of-fact for my tastes, but I feel silly when I try anything else. I'll have to practice, descriptive writing exercises or something. I often forget to think of writing as a craft.

Hmmm....I can see what you're saying that as a writer you tend to stick more to what people are saying to each other and the emotion behind that comes through clear without you really having to thrash it out on the page. But you're not much for smell or touch imagery (I love your visual imagery though :-) ) but I honestly don't believe that that leaves you as an inferior writer! Wanting to expand and learning not to feel silly is a great idea but don't get trapped in the idea of 'this way that other people do is better than that way which I do)

You know I adore your writing! And I only really think you should delve into the sensual cos I'm sexcrazed!

some time ago i looked at these and thought some of them looked interesting, don't know if they'd be any use. Feel silly. do it anyway. Read something thats positively rainforest lush?
Random book/author recommendation: Sarah Hall. The Electric Michelangelo (Morcambe tattooist in Coney Island) and Haweswater (fictional take on the valley/village they drowned to make a resevoir for Manchester). that, particularly, is tremendously descriptive but without..dripping. Well, lots of dripping actually, with t'rain and all, but you know what i mean. She's got a new one out soon too, i'm all excitabled.

more sense of place books: Waterland- Graham Swift, Gormenghast(i think that might do your nut though) The shipping News or the short story collection Close Range by Annie Proulx (they tend to package that as Brokeback and someotherstuff now)... I'm trying to think of more American ones and nothing's coming to mind, which is ridiculous.

I feel silly writing desciptions too, sometimes. Sorta like I'm bashing the reader over the head with 'THIS IS WHAT IS THERE DAMNIT FOOL!'.

Of course, my reaction to just throw out random details every now and then possibly isn't the best one, but it's one that I have.
