Sep. 5th, 2003 10:22 pmI tend to get bored in exams. I always finish early. So I end up writing whatever's in my head on the exam paper. It's interesting to see what I come up with, but of course the disadvantage is that I then have to hand it in. I've lost some good little snippets that way.
Anyway, here's one of my latest. It needs work, and there was originally more of it, but here's what I remember.

"Are you new to Paganism?"
He looked at the other people, chatting idly by the fire, then looked back at her with a twisted half-smile on his face.
"Paganism? This isn't Paganism." His smile widened, his teeth were bared.
"Paganism is dancing and drumming and the moon, sex and death, life and light. This..." he gestured at the small circle of people, "this is a nothing religion. A joke. People treading oh-so-carefully between the dark and the light, who can't even get the shadows right. This isn't Paganism, it's a fucking compromise." He offered her a cigarette, lit one for himself, and shook his head.
"A fucking compromise." Half under his breath.
She stiffened, injured by his mocking tone, though she didn't know why it was that his words seemed to matter.
"Well... blessed be." She said it dismissively, and he let out a short harsh bark of laughter.
"Yeah. Something like that."
She walked back to the fire and left him alone in the shadows.

It features one of four characters that I just woke up and... knew one day. Midnight. He's dangerous, and you really don't want to cross him.
I'm hoping that someday I'll get something substantial written about the four of them, but at the moment they just sit in the back of my head and make the occasional comment. So I research them, and think about them, and write snippets of conversation. In the back of exam papers.
