The thing about SGA is that when you're trying to recommend it to people who don't share the love of the ridiculous and the morally dubious and the poorly written that you do, you kind of have to recommend it by saying that the show is incredibly awesome so long as you... don't watch quite a bit of it. Until after you've fallen in love. The show is awesome in many, many places, and the fandom explanations for many of the bits that aren't quite so awesome are incredible, and the amount of plot holes and dubious character choices and strange acting have led to unbelievable fanfic. It's essentially fandom that makes the show what it is, (although season four (what I have seen of it so far) kicks fucking arse), but I don't see how that's a bad thing. I just think it's a good idea to get very thoroughly into the fandom state of mind before watching the show because then not only will you be able to put up with the occasional dud, but the good bits will become unbelievable.
The ultimate argument, though, when it comes down to it? The ultimate rejoinder to any criticism of the show?
"Yes, but, Rodney McKay!"

Date: 2008-03-30 03:44 pm (UTC)I tried to get my Trekkie-friend, who I've already converted to BSG and Heroes, to watch SGA with the promise of watching pretty people in pretty places but he didn't even finish the first season :(
Currently my other friend is watching the first season. That only happens now because I've only bought the german DVDs some weeks ago and he always moans when I give him something english to watch. *g*
And my other friend who actually does the fandom thing sometimes is not into scifi. But I gave her "Written by the Victors" because she's a history geek. Perhaps it happens this way. (But here I see the problem coming that she isn't a slash fan. I only can rec McShep-stories)
Friends and fandom...

Date: 2008-03-30 03:47 pm (UTC)The huge problem is that season 1 is not really the best place to start unless you're already prepared to like the show. It's probably best to show people select season 3 episodes, and then get them started.

Because it's like its own little family with in-jokes and affectionate eyerolls and if you don't see that then you won't see the love.
Also: "Yes, but, Rodney McKay" is the perfect rejoinder to anything! Even if it isn't technically SGA related.

Date: 2008-03-30 04:20 pm (UTC)This is my argument every single time. And it's also my response when people go "well, you like SGA...why don't you like SG1 just as much?" Because Rodney's not there (well, he is, but I like the way he's changed and grown in Pegasus;) SGA is just more human. I mean, they're funny and they screw up and I care about each and every one of them. I mean, I care about Lorne and Zelenka just as much as I care about John and Rodney. Major characters, secondary characters, all characters. Fran and Michael and Todd, I get happy when they appear. SGA is awesome!

And I still think it's a way better show than Torchwood. I always preface my Torchwood love with "I know it isn't actually any good but I enjoy it anyway." With SGA it's more like "BECAUSE IT IS AWESOME LOLARITY, THAT'S WHY."
