Oh, those crazy germans! (There are several links to strange german behaviour, which were compiled for visitor during the world cup. But we are also strange when there's no world cup *g*) http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,416920,00.html
I am dorky and take great delight in poking through random entries in the Encyclopedia Mythica (http://pantheon.org/) and Brewer's Phrase & Fable (http://bartleby.com/81/).
Hopefully you already have this (http://jescaflowne.livejournal.com/76458.html), but it never fails to send me into fits of giggles. And you asked for shinies, and this is definitely shiny. Sparkly, even. :D
And if you want a longer distraction, here is a really random and funny book: Little Eve Edgarton (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/15660). It is strange and obscure, and I bought my copy at an antique store because the first page is awesomeness and also because there is a picture captioned "Don't delay me! ... I've got to make four hundred muffins!" (The HTML version linked off Gutenberg includes the illustrations.) What can I say, I'm a book geek and just love finding random old books. :) (Also, apparently you can listen (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/22982) to the book as well! I have not tried this yet so I've no idea what it sounds like, but it seems there are podficcers for out-of-copyright books. This is an exciting new prospect!) Edit: I have tried listening to the audio version of Little Eve now. Don't. The reader gets the inflections all wrong, which ruins the awesomeness. :(
