As a quick moment of glee in an otherwise intensely crappy day:

Started creative writing with the year 7s. OH MY GOD THE MINI MARY SUES!!!

If there is one thing good about being my age, it's that there were no internets when I was a teenager. I cringe to think of the fic I'd have written and the emo posts I would have made.

Good luck with the Sues.

It's kind of adorable. Seriously. One of them had a heroine with a 'porcelain face' who brought nothing but trouble with her on her 'chestnut stallion', her 'crimson velvet cloak' trailing the ground behind her.

D'AAAAAW!

Likewise. The ones that *did* make it online when I was 19 were bad enough ... internet at 12 would have been AN DISASTER.

At least being 19 is a bit of an excuse. :) My very first posted fic, written when I was 32 involves the heroine looking at herself in a mirror so that I could describe her.

Of course there was also kinky sex, but still....

'Nny looked in a mirror but was barely able even to see the mousy brown hair due to the cracks that spidered across the surface as soon as the glass caught her reflection.

THE END!

I'm sure there's an online development arc that occurs no matter what age you are when you come to it ... strange, that.

the heroine looking at herself in a mirror so that I could describe her

Oh OUCH. Been there.

HOW HAVE YOU NOT KILLED THEM.

They's learnin'! The only reason I didn't write Sues when I was eleven was that I kind of hated myself. My job is to try to equip them to write better, see.

Furrymuff, I wrote some *dreadful* Sues. What sort of things will you be guiding them towards?

Date: 2008-06-17 07:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] villainny.livejournal.com
Mostly I'm creating a writer's toolbox with them, it's very very free writing on their part with as little guidance plotwise and that as possible. I'm doing stuff like, y'know, how you can use props to describe character (eg what's in their utility belt handbag), how to use dialogue to tell a story (using bits of HHGttG hopefully), how to have characters communicate without talking (OMG BROCCOLI TEST), how to use more interesting chronology than THIS HAPPENED AND THEN THIS.

Excellent, Stephen-Kingy stuff. :D Did you actually set them the brocoli test for their characters?

AND MARWOOD REFUSES TO LEARN BECAUSE HE SAYS IT'S RIDICULOUS AND UNDIGNIFIED.

OH TINY MARY SUES.

The little girl I used to babysit started writing a Star Wars fic with the most blatant Sue ever, and it was SO ADORABLE.

AWWWWW!

Bless! Damn, I remember being that age. I freaked my class out, because I wrote an angst!Sue and my teacher was so shocked she made me read it out.

Come to think of it, it was actually a really successful deterrent...

Awwwww!

Man, I remember the Sues I wrote at that age. It is such a good thing I hadn't discovered fanfic or the internet yet; I just stuck to OCs.

...OCs with speshul jewel-colored eyes who were spunky and badass and could talk to animals and were named things like Ai-liana and (I kid you not) Xiiya, okay.

I didn't write then, but I did beta for my friends in years 7 through 10, and when I look back I just have to think "My god, did she really think that having a Muggle karate teacher in Hogwarts was a good idea?!"
