I haven't got a means of watching The Rising again right now, 'cos my DVD drive is a recalcitrant bastard and my family have better things to do than SG:A (IS THERE SUCH A THING?) but... they changed Teyla's dad's name, right? I swear it was something like 'Tegahn' and not Torren. Am I going mad?

Unless Tegahn was, like, a title. I like pretending the writers make sense!

I wondered about that too! According to the Gateworld transcript:

TEYLA: I am Teyla Emmagan, daughter of Turghan.

It definitely wasn't pronounced the same as the name she said in Search and Rescue ::baffled::

I do not like their spelling at all. D: I don't know why, but that just... it is a word that looks gross. I AM WEIRD, I ADMIT IT.

No, it totally does look gross. It looks like turgid.

Heeee! Flaccid is so much worse, though.

I've been thinking that "Tagaan" (or whatever) was her mother's name. It makes plenty of sense that the Athosians would be matrelineal, so Teyla might well trace herself through her mother instead of her father.

That would be awesome.

I think I assumed father - well, partly because hi! Patriarchal society! But also because she made mention of the fact that her father was taken by the wraith but there was no mention of her mother, so I'd kind assumed that her mother had died earlier - possibly when she was young - so she wouldn't have necessarily identified that much. I mean, Charin seems kind of like a replacement mother-figure, no?

Oh, I did the same thing - I only went *foreheadsmack* Hey! after seeing 501, but it does make sense. Nomadic society under constant threat of extinction = matrelineal descent = natch.

Possibly she died when Teyla was young, but if it was traditional, she might still name herself with reference to her mother. (My brain suggests "Worf: son of Mogue" in which case Mogue died when Worf was four or five years old? Because I'm an enormous dork.)

At least that is what I'm telling myself to blot out the voices suggesting that the writers just FORGOT. I am happy with my delusions. :)

I thought this too - especially since she uses her own last name for the baby and Kanaan doesn't even get a look-in. Combined with the fact that Teyla was their leader it gives the (probably accidental) impression that women have a fair amount of power and respect in Athosian society

There is the possibility it was her mother she was referring to when she claimed she was the daughter of -

See above reponse - that would totally make me happy, though.

I was also thinking that it could be her father's middle name. After all, it would be weird to say, "I am Villainny, daughter of my son."

Frankly, I have VERY LITTLE faith in the writers. I think they forgot and I think giving them the matrelineal idea is giving them way more credit than they actually deserve. That being said, I also think the matrelineal idea is the one that makes the most sense and is therefore the one that I'm going with.

And yeah, I always spelled it "Teghan" and think that Turghan is a terrible, terrible, creepy name.
