The word 'friend' is problematic.

(This is nothing to do with my friends, by the way. It's more of a linguistically complicated internet culture thing.)

Does this mean that I shouldn't expect any wedding invitations from you in the future? ;)

*cracks up*

I seriously doubt I'll ever get married, to be honest, but no. I was thinking about it in terms of artificial intimacy with celebrities and suchlike, in the context of friends lists on facebook and such, which are frequently essentially a marketing tool, but the terminology is problematic.

It is problematic, and highly interesting. Especially so in the context of marketing, but even the friending system on LJ is fun to look at.

Everybody have different expectations on their flists, and it's a hard line to balance sometimes, knowing what sort of replies are appropriate to any given entry.
