I was wandering around Bath Abbey today with
foreverdirt and (among other things, including a memorial plaque with teenage emo poetry) we were reading through the wall plaques to find the ones that most obviously pinged as Carefully Talking Around The Gay. And there were some pretty good examples, but one in particular... man. It was kind of lovely, so I thought I'd copy it out for you.

Sacred to the memory of WCJ Esq., a captain in the British Navy who departed this life Dec. 6th 1837 aged 48. Abounding in the qualities that constitute a Christian and a gentleman he fulfilled the various obligations of a son and a brother less as a duty, than as a labour of love; kind, affectionate and generous, friendship with him was more than a name; it was a tie that he hallowed, a bond he never broke. Possessing the abilities of a seaman in conjunction with the characteristics of an officer, he was equally an honor to his country and an ornament to his profession.
This monument is erected as a tribute to his worth and excellence, and in testimony of the love and affection of his brother (Captain GG of the British Navy.)

Date: 2008-08-20 01:38 am (UTC)I remember walking around Bath Abbey with my cousin a few years ago, and we saw the plaques of one Marmaduke Peacock, and another one to Manly Powers. Did you see them?

Date: 2008-08-20 02:08 am (UTC)I'd love to see the rest! (That one, oddly, doesn't ping me for Talking Around The Gay, aside from the lack of mention of a wife; maybe my radar is just broken.)
