To me it means union. Like, when I was a union employee, "my local" was the local chapter of it. Since that can't be what makes you feel home, um...what's a local?
A pub! Your local is always a pub, and it's generally one you don't have to dress up for, and feel at home at, one that serves your favourite drinks and always has a seat for you. Our new local is called the Frog and Fiddle, and is apparently brought to you by the people who brought me my previous local, the Pig and Fiddle, in Bath. :D!
Thank you for asking, Flora. I was completely baffled about what the meaning of the word "local" was in this context. In sf convention fandom, a local is a volunteer who lives in the area near the convention, as opposed to someone who is coming in from out-of-town.
