I've decided to try my hand at candlemaking this year; purely functionally, not in a decorative way. It's another string to add to the post-apocalyptic survival plan bow that Smaller and me're putting together. So far we have an allotment, a good cook, and someone who can... vaguely knit and put up flat-pack furniture. Oh, and a heavy dose of lesbianism.

Bizarrely enough, this does actually make me feel better, as well as filling my spare time with stuff that won't give me time to get all depressive.

:D

Anyone else got any bankable skills to offer our hill-farm settlement?

Oh, I've changed my default icon, also. I figure 'cynical toddler' just about sums up my emotional/intellectual development.

Have you considered learning about carding wool and spinning? [livejournal.com profile] rotem seems to be enjoying it.

*waves hand* Considering I sometimes want to start a commune/cult type thing, going back to basics with gardening and hand-crafting and getting AWAY from this consumerist society...

Post-Apolcaliptic preparations sound good!

Alas, I'm on the other side of the world.

I can bake a good loaf of challah bread! (And a so-so loaf of various other kinds. :D) And I can knit, er, scarves. So if you need challah bread and a way to keep it warm, post apocalypse, I'm your girl.

I love this icon every time you use it. I also often like babies who are all about the examining and scowling and stuff. Heh.

Gardening experience and health care/first aid/emergency responder knowledge?

I can knit, sew, and spin yarn! Um, I can also lug stuff around, do basic maintainence of small children, and clean.

(Having an Apocalypse Plan is very important, yo.)

I can track things, lug stuff around and can usually keep people from pissing each other off too much. I'm also good at brewing up various caffeinated beverages. Now THERE'S a survival skill. ^__^

Pity I'm on the other side of the Atlantic. I'd cheerily join your hill-farm settlement. :)

listening to stuff. people will still have more stuff after the apocolypse. also, general gophering. erm....have you read The Carhullan Army by sarah hall (that woman with the tattoo book i keep going on about.) it is kind of about this. it is grim. but everso good. and may add to any wish you have to come see where we are from (or possibly scare you away totally).

I have got as far as an interview to live in a hippy sanctuary.(i really have to stop calling it that).

Helping weave the web of crack that will save our minds? i know this is a skill most of the potential settlement dwellers have in abundance, but still.

aw, crap. this is not terribly practical. I could bring a mechanical engineer with me?:D

My husband and I did this back when the Cold War was looking ugly. So I can spin, weave, dye, knit, crochet, sew, work leather, make shoes, make a trap, make a bow and arrows, kill gut and skin, butcher, make jerky, make beer, wine and cider, make a fire without matches, make soap and string, wash my hair without shampoo. I know a bit about medicinal herbs, edible fungi and how to tickle a trout, tap an eel and tie dry flies [though that's a lots less useful.

Given the time and energy I could build and furnish a celtic style round house - wattle and daub, yummy - and I know the principles of coppicing though, of course, haven't the land to practice it.

*sigh* It was amazing how much I did before the internet!

I pondered and pondered and couldn't think of anything, and then I realised, oh yes. I'm training to be a doctor. Forgot that one.

Also, I can knit, albeit slowly, and cook and tablet-weave (fairly well and quite badly, respectively). xxx

I volunteer to be the living library, since my only useful (?) skill is memorising ridiculous amounts of quotes and such from things I've read. (Yes, I had a weird "hey, that's me!" moment at the end of Farenheit 451.)
