The latest delightful trend in our school - now that I have made the pupils in my classes uncomfortable enough not to use 'gay' as an insult half so much as they used to - is for any and all things they consider unfair (such as asking them to do their work) to be called 'racist'.

Needless to say they get a verbal smack around the back of the head every time; it's difficult, in a maths lesson, with around 30 seconds to explain, to let them know precisely why they CANNOT HAVE THAT WORD.

(For the record, the county in which I teach is around 95% white. The school I teach in is more like 73%.)

I feel like I ought to put together some kind of assembly or something. Most of them wouldn't listen, and despite the amount of reading I have done and the amount I try to learn I would still suck at it. But maybe I could open their eyes to how they could maybe suck a little less?

So far, the best epithet ever spontaneously adopted by a group of teenagers was when the girls at the treatment center I worked at spontaneously started calling all unfair, angering, exciting, entertaining, or ridiculous actions "scandalous." Seriously. They came up with this by themselves. Maybe see if you can get the kids at your school to pick it up?
