I dunno, I mean, they are doing it all because they love each other. They just suck at showing it. I think both Dean and Sam are terrified- the 'monster' bit was straight out of fear and temper- and they just don't know how to deal with it all.
I think Cas is being an ass because Dean was threatened (he's his 'weakness' after all) and, well, Dean has been dealing with the fact that he might have to kill Sam for three years now, and can't, and Sammy has lost his brother twice (don't forget Mystery Spot) and his arrognace and pride can't deal with that. Add to that Ruby, whom I'm sure is a double agent (in my wilder imaginings, she's actually Lilith) and well there you have it.
