Basically it follows the story of a man who sets up a cake shop and the people he hires to work there, but it's also about all sorts of other things like kidnapping and domestic abuse and The Gay of Demonic Charm (direct quote) and cake after bloody mouthwatering cake, so quite possibly not something to watch while on a diet.
The thing I loved most about it - apart from the adorable actors, possibly - was how clear it was that it had come from a manga, the way that I could very nearly see the ways that the panels had been drawn. It's like a particular shot in The Crow where the camera swoops back from a broken window, giving you an epic and dramatic still which you can tell was probably the last full page from the first comic, or something. When you add to that the bizarre creative touches that only really work on screen, like the musical numbers, you end with something that completely delighted me and I'm definitely gonna be forcing people to watch with me regularly. Even if I don't have any idea what happened in it. XD
