I watched kind of an amazing film called Antique last night, which was interesting and insane and cute and confusing in a way that I suspect only something based on a manga can be. Basically it follows the story of a man who sets up a cake shop and the people he hires to work there, but it's also about all sorts of other things like kidnapping and domestic abuse and The Gay of Demonic Charm (direct quote) and cake after bloody mouthwatering cake, so quite possibly not something to watch while on a diet.

The thing I loved most about it - apart from the adorable actors, possibly - was how clear it was that it had come from a manga, the way that I could very nearly see the ways that the panels had been drawn. It's like a particular shot in The Crow where the camera swoops back from a broken window, giving you an epic and dramatic still which you can tell was probably the last full page from the first comic, or something. When you add to that the bizarre creative touches that only really work on screen, like the musical numbers, you end with something that completely delighted me and I'm definitely gonna be forcing people to watch with me regularly. Even if I don't have any idea what happened in it. XD

Oh, they kept the Demon Gay, then? that's awesome! Did he ever wear a Black Leather Jacket of Sex, by any chance? (Read the manga way back when, quite loved it, and the art is beautiful, though it made me sooooo hungry reading - all those delicious cakes!! Anyway, there was a drama (TV show) based on the manga, apparently, but they made the cook not-gay, which, um, kind of would change the story, I think...)

Movies made from manga rarely make sense, because they're generally trying to condense 5-50 volumes of story into 2 hours or less...

Sadly no Black Leather Jacket of Sex, I think it's been kidnapped by John Sheppard. :D It actually made a lot more sense than I was expecting, but one of the storylines was very much underexplained, and it felt kind of unfinished. Mostly because I was wanting satisfactory resolution to the part where the chef is in love with the owner, though; when it comes to my romance I'm seriously naive in my tastes and always want happy endings.

We watched the entire anime series (Antique Bakery) and when we learned about the Korean live-action version we died of squee. When we actually WATCHED Antique we died of squee even more. What a wonderful adaptation!

The kiss between Seon-Woo and Jean-Baptiste is likely my favorite onscreen male/male kiss ever.

Have you ever seen Shelter? I really have to put the kisses in that film above those in Antique any day. Sadly neither of the actors in it are nearly so pretty as Ji-Hun Ju, though...
