May. 28th, 2009 03:26 pmGrr. Just lugged three massive bags of paper for recycling around to the carpark home of the recycling bins, only to find that all have been taken away save the clothing one and the juicebox one. No more recycling facilities in a distance I could lug them, so they've now been chucked out. I refuse to feel guilty for that - I tried, okay?
I grew up watching ST:TOS, in fact I don't really remember my mother watching anything else on TV save for her Friday nights in with Frasier and Friends and Top of the Pops. I was never a massive fan of it, but it was far more a part in framing my experience of sci-fi than any of the shows I've come to be a fan of on my own terms. So yeah, this was kind of a nostalgia trip for me, in a strange and rose-tinted way, and I was one of the most squeaky and bouncy in the audience I think.
I don't have much to say about the plot of the film because I've only seen it once; it was simple enough for people with no experience of the Trek universe to get it, left plenty of gaps for fandom to fill in, and allowed all of the characters to shine in their own ways. There's not much more can be asked of blockbuster sci-fi movies, so I'm pretty much happy with that.
Speaking of characters shining...
I mostly fell in love with the less main characters, apart from Uhura (by which I mean I loved her and I considered her a main character, not that she was a less main that I didn't love.) This is a longstanding thing with me; seriously, the first time I watched the show I was deeply in love with Chekov for no apparent reason, it's just something I have a tendency to do.
I thought McCoy was absolutely incredible, spot on portrayal of someone who'd turn into Deforest Kelly. Like I said last night, I want to see him paired with absolutely everyone and anyone, because his character was awesome and snarky and capable and (it totally helps) hot. Uhura was wonderful, forthright and strong and equally capable, and I thought her relationship with Spock was awesome; I wish that it hadn't been felt necessary to prove her hotness credentials by stripping her down, though. I guess it went some way towards showing the differences in Kirk and Spock's relative shallow levels, but still. Chekov was adorable, I want one of my own and feel like a horribly pervy old lady for that reaction; I had no idea he was such a genius, seriously. Sulu was kickass, as is only right and proper, and I want to read endless conversations between him and Chekov because they're both so awesome. :D
Also Scotty. SCOTTY. I just - I can imagine Simon Pegg's utter glee at getting to yell things like "I'M GIVING IT ALL SHE'S GOT, CAP'N!" and I bounce in my seat. Scotty is someone I likewise want paired with absolutely anyone and everyone, and he's most of the reason I want to buy whatever special edition DVDs might rear their shiny and doubtless expensive heads.
Also Kirk and Spock were in it.

The tribbles were in a cage, at the beginning of the scene there is one, and by the end there are two!
