ETA: TENTATIVE RETRACTION! Last time I had this thing it took everything I could throw at it and more, and it took paying for anti-virus stuff to stop it. [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth recommended a free program that seems to have worked, at least for now. FINGERS CROSSED IT STICKS! If I disappear without warning, assume it has reappeared. ;)

As things stand: I appear to have a trojan thing on my main computer. THIS IS A PROBLEM. I'm moving at the end of the month and therefore cannot afford to get my laptop fixed, or get any sort of virus protection doobry on this computer. I need this computer desperately to do my job, so the only thing I can see to do is to attempt to suppress it enough that I can do my work while my computer is not connected to the internet.

In practical terms? This means not having the internet at all for the next at least two months. I won't be able to afford to set up internet in my new flat for a while, and I will still have the problem of virus and broken laptop even when I get to a point where I can afford that.

this is problematic because I cannot check my email at work. The igoogle I was using to do so no longer works, a change in the gadget or something, so I will be completely and totally without internet unless smaller allows me to use her computer while she's out. So no signing up for [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match or anything. I... may go mad. So... goodbye until further notice, okay? I'd give you my address and beg for letters only I'm going to move in a month so there's not much point in that either. Take care of yourselves and each other, and don't forget about me. ;)

You could send us (by which I mean me) your new address.

I will do, when I move! :)

But you won't have internet then! If you send it NOW, in, like, 2.5 weeks, we can send you things!

Then I will find out my new address and send it sooner. ;)

What antivirus have you tried? Have you identified which trojan it is? There's some good, free help out there because two months without a nny is kind of like two months without breathing.

Also, need address, plz.

First thing I'd try is AVG which is free and very excellent: http://free.avg.com/

This is the same one that I got on my laptop, and it took everything I could throw at it, freeware-wise. Smaller says I can borrow her laptop whenever she's not in, which is awesome of her; I'll send you my new address when I move unless you wanna send something within the month.

*♥ you*

D'you have a name for the Trojan? There are specific things out there for some of the virulent ones, and not always easily searchable...

No idea. All I know about it is that it starts my computer talking to me at random intervals - soundbites off the internet - and slows everything dooooooown.

Oh no!

Just give us your new address, and make a ninja-like visit to your local library and use the public pc to tell us when you move.

Also, you can get very very good freeware anti-virus. AVG is probably the best.

AVG sadly didn't work on this very same problem when I got it on my laptop. :/ I will try a few, but I don't hold out much hope.

New address will go up friendslocked just before I move, I'll tie Smaller up and hide her somewhere long enough to do that on her laptop. ;)

Or this, which cleaned a dozen trojans from a shared work computer yesterday.

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely give it a try! This was a particularly stubborn trojan when it was on my laptop, and I threw quite a few different free things at it, but thanks very much for the advice and I cross all available digits. ;)
