Were slides genuinely faster when I was a kid, or did it just feel that way?

Not sure-haven't been on one in years as my bum gets stuck and I kinda go stutter-stutter-stutter down the ride with hoardes of onlookers laughing their arses off and taking pictures.

Well, when you were a kid you were smaller, so you could cover your own body-length in a smaller period of time on a slide. Maybe?

Both. Especially plastic slides. Which is to say, kids don't go down them terribly fast, but it feels fast to them, but adults go down even slower, because more mass (size + weight) causes more friction, meaning a slower slide.
